March 15, 2022 The 193 member states of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday to promote cycling. The proposal was made by the representative of Turkmenistan with a resolution "Incorporation of bicycles into public transport systems for sustainable development". Citing convenience, health benefits and accessibility, she expressed hope that cycling could also play a bigger role in reducing global greenhouse gases.
According to the official website of the United Nations: "The bicycle was invented 200 years ago and has been an important means of transportation for 140 years. There are 1 billion bicycles in the world and 50% of human beings can use bicycles."
The UN General Assembly decided to call on all member states to integrate bicycles into local public transport in both urban and rural areas of developing and industrialized countries, improve road safety and promote the use of bicycles. Ride a bike to reduce the number of people and increase the number of rides. This should help achieve sustainable development, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The proposal proposes strategies to promote a community-connected bicycle network. According to the United Nations, the global transport sector contributes a quarter of all energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. The group stressed that more cycling would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The decision was eventually accepted and adopted by all 193 member states of the United Nations, but the decision is currently only a binding recommendation for member states.
