In 2020, Germany’s Overall Bicycle Market Has Grown By 16.9%

According to a report by Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), the overall bicycle market in Germany has grown by 16.9% in 2020 to more than 5 million units.

In 2020, the overall growth of electric bicycles in Germany is very obvious. Among them, there are 1.95 million electric bicycles. The average price of unit sales increased by 38%, reaching 1279 euros, which is a figure from all distribution channels. If you just look at IBD, IBD still has nearly 70% of the market in Germany, and its average price is even higher: the average selling price of traditional bicycles is 630 euros, while the average price of electric bicycles is 2,975 euros. Coupled with the combined effect of sales volume and average price growth, the turnover of the entire bicycle business in Germany has increased by a staggering 60% in 2020.

As for the production areas of all these electric bicycles, production in Germany and Europe has increased significantly to 73%. The re-adjustment of the industry in Germany and the EU's anti-dumping tariff policy on electric bicycles implemented by China has also had a very obvious impact. Despite the increase in deliveries in Taiwan, imports of electric bicycles made in Asia to Germany have dropped by 24% overall. In terms of traditional bicycles, Asia plays a more important role in the source of German imports, accounting for 47%. At the same time, Germany's overall exports increased by 7.9%. This growth was mainly due to electric bicycles. Its exports increased by 15%, while exports of traditional bicycles only increased by 3.8%.

For the entire Europe including Switzerland, the size of the electric bicycle market has increased by 42% in 2020, which is another staggering number. Due to this dynamic growth, the biggest concerns in the entire value chain are the scarcity of goods, the long delivery time of complete bicycles and parts, and the lack of skilled mechanics to keep growing. After all, in 2020 alone, the number of electric bicycles driving on German streets has increased from 5.4 to 7.1 million, and this growth continues.
