In the first five months of 2021, the export volume of electric bicycles from Taiwan, China reached a record high. The total export value of electric bicycles reached 555 million US dollars, an increase of 44% over the same period in 2020. The total export value of ordinary bicycles was US$525 million, an increase of 38% over the same period last year.

This is not the first time that the export of electric bicycles has surpassed the export of bicycles. During the five-month period in the same period last year, the total export value of electric bicycles was 385 million U.S. dollars, and the export value of ordinary bicycles was 381 million U.S. dollars. The value of ordinary bicycles exported in 2020 is US$1.21 billion, while the value of electric bicycles has reached US$987 million.

The United States remains the largest importer of electric bicycles, accounting for nearly 40% of the total. Europe accounted for 53.6% of bicycle parts exports, and the United States accounted for 14%. The data also mentioned that the number of pedal bicycle parts exported from Taiwan to Europe also increased by 65.2% year-on-year. The total export value of parts and components reached US$1.74 billion. Relevant departments said that if there were no pandemics and the decrease in bicycle supply and the trend of people using shared bicycles, bicycle demand would have been higher.

When related demand increased, the Taipei Times stated that the ongoing tension between the United States and China has not yet been resolved, and this is just one reason why foreign buyers are seeking to transfer orders to neighboring islands. There are also tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese electric bicycles and anti-dumping duties entering Europe, which makes Taiwan, China the first choice for purchases at certain price points.
