The annual turnover of the Austrian bicycle industry in 2021 is almost 1.03 billion euros, surpassing the billion mark for the first time.
According to the Association of Austrian Sporting Goods Manufacturers and Suppliers of Sports Equipment (VSSÖ ), the turnover increased by 17% compared to 2020, due to the shortage of bicycle market demand, sales in 2021 are about 490,000 units (-1.2%), the overall average price at EUR 2,095, an increase of 18.4%. Among them, non-electric bicycles were 1,289 euros, an increase of 16%, and electric bicycles were 3,410 euros, an increase of 7%. Of the bicycles sold, electric bicycles accounted for 45% of the total share, and adult bicycles accounted for 55% of the total share. Austria is again the strongest market in the DACH region.
In terms of electric bicycles: a total of about 756 million euros will be paid in 2021, accounting for about 73% of the total bicycle sales in 2021. Among them, electric cargo bikes exceeded more than 2,200 units for the first time, a strong increase of 136.5% over last year, doubling the sales volume.
For children and youth bicycles: More than 90,000 children and youth bicycles were sold in 2021, an increase of 14.7% compared to the same period. About 60 to 70 percent of the children's bikes are sold at Easter. Compared to the Easter lockdown in 2020.
Off-road bikes, gravel bikes and road bikes also showed a growth trend, with a total of nearly 13,000 units sold in 2021, an increase of 38% over the same period, of which off-road and gravel bikes accounted for 4,738 units. As an emerging market e-gravel (electrically assisted gravel bike), 930 were also sold.
As a climate-friendly travel accelerator, Austria leads Germany with 43% and Switzerland with 38% with a market share of 45%. But these figures are only sales figures to retailers, not market sales figures to end consumers.
Michael Nendwich, spokesman for the sporting goods trade at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, said: "The demand for e-bikes is increasing and every bicycle sold in Austria is electric. These figures show that the bicycle as an economic force can no longer be ignored."
