The U.S. imported 4.7 million bicycles in the first quarter of 2022, worth $565 million at the port. In dollar terms, that's up 52% from the first quarter of last year and 143% from the same quarter in 2020, when the pandemic supply chain first slowed.
The first quarter of this year is followed by a flood of import data for the second half of 2021 (see bottom bar). The third quarter of last year was the largest quarter at $571 million.
The country of origin of imported bikes has changed significantly over the past four years. The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese imports four years ago have not yet gone into effect. Since then, the U.S. has sourced more and more bikes from Vietnam and Cambodia to evade those tariffs. However, due to the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam's exports fell sharply in the second half of 2021.
