According to a large-scale research report on electric bicycles among 6,400 Dutch people conducted by foreign media, the Dutch hope to buy electric bicycles within a year. This is equivalent to the estimated 1.2 million electric bicycles sold in the Netherlands by 2021.

The survey organizer John Kivit concluded: “One in ten Dutch people want to buy an electric bicycle within a year. Most of them (61%) plan to buy an electric city bicycle. This is compared with 2020. The market share is declining (76%). It can be seen that consumers are increasingly choosing electric mountain bikes, electric bicycles, hybrid bicycles or cargo bikes."

According to Kivit, 51% of people believe that convenience is usually the main reason for buying an electric bicycle. Other factors are the reduction of physical damage, followed by the most demanding riding speed. Kivit said: "To a lesser extent, people will mention the environment, the positive stories of family, friends or colleagues, the forward-looking and appearance of electric bicycles." But price will usually be the main factor preventing consumers from buying electric bicycles.

36% of the electric bicycles sold in 2021 will be used for commercial commuting. Most electric bicycles are still used for entertainment or leisure.
