The German two-wheeler industry association ZIV (Zweirad-Industrie-Verband) released the mood barometer for the first half of 2020. Compared with the same period last year, sales of bicycles and electric bicycles in Germany have increased.
ZIV, the two-wheeler industry association, estimates that approximately 3.2 million bicycles and electric bicycles were sold between January and June. In terms of sales, it increased by approximately 9.2% compared to the same period last year. Therefore, it can be assumed that by the first half of 2020, sales of bicycles, electric bicycles, components and accessories will also increase significantly. Although bicycle sales have been declining slightly over the years, with few exceptions, the two-wheel industry association estimates that sales in the first half of 2020 will increase by 6.1% to 2.1 million units. The electric bicycle category once again achieved double-digit growth, reaching an estimated 1.1 million. This corresponds to an increase of approximately 15.8%.
The mobility of a bicycle is closely related to the system. We also know that bicycles and electric bicycles are also aimed at new target groups this year. Even after the COVID-19 crisis, many of these new users will not be without two-wheel mobility. David Eisenberger, ZIV Director of Marketing and Communications, said: "We are cautiously optimistic that the bicycle and electric vehicle industry can develop at the same high level as in previous years."
The production of bicycles and electric bicycles in Germany declined slightly. According to data from the Federal Statistics Office, imports of bicycles and electric bicycles fell by -14.4% during the reporting period. Electric bicycles account for less than 28% of imports. The export of bicycles and electric bicycles has also declined. From January to June, exports fell by nearly -2.6%. The share of electric bicycles in exports is about 38%.
