According to foreign media reports, the Portuguese bicycle industry in the first two months of 2022 saw a 49% increase in sales in the first two months of 2022, according to a report prepared by Portuguese bicycle industry body ABIMOTA detailing manufacturing and export output in 2022.

Portugal, as one of the hotspots of European bicycle manufacturing business, achieved export sales of 110 million euros in the value of Portuguese bicycles during this period, continuing the trend of the record annual total of the manufacturing center in 2021, creating a value of about 594 million euros. It was worth 73.78 million euros for producers in the region in January and February last year.

Gil Nadais, Secretary General of ABIMOTA, commented, “These are frankly positive numbers and we are very optimistic. We predict that this year our growth may slow down and in 2021 we have grown by around 39%. However, by 2022 Two months of data seems to reinforce the growth, and if this trend continues, we will continue to grow, and most importantly, the percentage is up again compared to last year,"

Secretary-General Nadais added, “Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, scarcity and consequent increases in fuel prices explain the acceleration we are feeling. I think these are the catalysts. The reason we have been able to achieve this kind of growth is because Portugal's entire industry has been working and investing since the last decade, so when a crisis hits, we're ready to respond aggressively."

This result reflects steady progress across Europe over the past 12 months. Both the Spanish and Austrian markets have also seen record sales of bicycles so far.
