The European Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) trade association LEVA-EU announced that the European light electric vehicle market will continue to grow and prosper in all market segments in 2019. According to the LEVA-EU, the COVID-19 pandemic has unexpectedly highlighted the health benefits of LEV, although there is still little awareness of the potential contribution of LEV to making transportation between EU decision makers more sustainable.
A press release from LEVA-EU stated that the total sales of electric bicycles in 2019 are currently $2.285 billion, which is much lower than the nearly 2.8 million in 2018. However, not all member states have announced their final results for 2019. The final total is expected to be at least about 3 million.
The largest electric bicycle market is Germany, with 1.36 million sold last year, followed by 423,000 in the Netherlands and 238,000 in Belgium. Among these countries, electric bicycles account for the highest share of total bicycle sales, with 31.5%, 42% and 51% respectively.
