In 2021, the Netherlands' Pon Holding set a record for electric bike sales. Pon Holding's 2021 turnover was 8.1 billion euros, an 11 percent increase from 7.3 billion euros in 2020. Operating profit was EUR 559 million, a significant increase (60%) compared to EUR 351 million in the previous year. Among them, the performance of electric bicycles is more prominent.

Pon Bike's sales in Germany, represented by Derby Cycle and Cycling Sports Group, still rose 14 percent to 1.3 billion euros amid supply chain disruptions. A large portion comes from the sale of electric bikes.

This performance is mainly due to Gazelle and the new Dutch factory in Dieren, or a sales model that combines online and stationary retail. This hybrid model proved to be a success factor.

A prime example, Pon said, is the acquisition of bicycle retail chain Mikes Bikes. The company has 12 stores in the San Francisco area and 60% of its sales come from online. Another major development is the opening of America's first Gazelle Experience Center in Santa Cruz, California.

Services offering "rental bikes" have grown mainly in German-speaking countries, while complex tax regulations have slowed growth in the Netherlands to some extent. Cargo bike maker Urban Arrow will continue to grow. The Dorel Sports acquisition is not included in the 2021 figures. The new company subsidiary had a turnover of 1.09 billion euros last year.
