A total of 228,400 electric bicycles were sold in Belgium in 2020, an increase of 18% from 2019, indicating that the epidemic has greatly increased consumers' willingness to buy electric bicycles. The same situation is also seen in other European countries. In 2020, 547,000 electric bicycles (+30%) were sold in the Netherlands, 514,672 in France (+29%), and 1.9 million in Germany (+43%). Compared with the impressive performance of electric bicycles, sales of non-electric bicycles have generally declined.

In 2020, Belgium sold 592,000 new bicycles (including electric and non-electric), a slight increase of 4% compared with 2019. The limited growth rate is mainly due to the exhaustion of inventory. Regardless of whether it is electric or not, the current global bicycle retailers are in short supply. The waiting time for buying a new electric bicycle in Belgium is between 4 to 6 months or even longer. Electric bicycles not only have the problem of partial shortage of materials, but also face the current situation of insufficient semiconductor supply. For this industry, it is not easy to increase production in the short term, and it takes a certain time to adjust the entire industrial chain. It is worth noting that in 2020, 348,210 bicycles in Belgium were sold in specialty stores, accounting for 58.8% of the country's total sales; 49.16% of the electric bicycles were sold in specialty stores.
